Both normal saline and lactated ringer can be used for hypercalcemia depending on the context:
- if patient is acidotic, avoid normal saline because it can cause more acidosis
- lactated ringer has calcium but has lower concentration and should generally be safe1
- plasma: 6-10 mg/dL
- LR: 5.41 mg/dL
