lactated ringer is safe for treating hypercalcemia

Both normal saline and lactated ringer can be used for hypercalcemia depending on the context:

  • if patient is acidotic, avoid normal saline because it can cause more acidosis
  • lactated ringer has calcium but has lower concentration and should generally be safe1
    • plasma: 6-10 mg/dL
    • LR: 5.41 mg/dL
