mandatory vs spontaneous breath

  • spontaneous breath: patient triggered breath
  • mandatory breath: the number of breaths each minute that will happen regardless of patient effort. Sometimes patient will trigger a breath with some assistance from the machine. Sometimes when the pause is too long between breaths, the machine will trigger a breath
