Negative inspiratory force (NIF) is also known as maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP). NIF is measured at bedside while patient in on the vent, whereas MIP/MEP are measured with PFT.
NIF is measured relative to PEEP in cmH2O or mbar with the following device:
NIF could also be measured using ventilator's built in function:
- setting trigger sensitivity to -20 mmHg, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDNcgA9aZcU
- expiratory hold maneuver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnmK0jq8TAo. NIF = PEEP - max PAW drop
