• Oxygen delivery is dependent on cardiac output and $O_2$ content¹

$$O_2\space delivery = CO\times\space O_2\space Content$$

• Oxygen content is the difference between arterial and venous oxygen. The equation can be rewritten as follows²:

$$V_{O_2}\space = CO\times\space (C_{aO_2}- C_{vO_2})$$

• Oxygen content is also dependent on several factors:

$$O_2\space Content = 1.39\times Hgb\times \%Sat +0.003\times P_aO_2$$

  • You can have hypoxia without hypoxemia: normal $O\_2$ sat but decreased $O\_2$ to the tissues. Hypoxia is oxygen delivery to tissues and rely on also cardiac output and hemoglobin concentration (oxygen delivery is dependent on cardiac output and oxygen content). Patients with heart failure or are severely anemic can have normal O2 sat but decreased delivery.
