subacute thyroiditis

• related: Endocrine

• cause: thyrotoxicosis following viral URI

• sx: tender thyroid

• pathogenesis: leakage of stored thyroid hormone from damaged thyroid follicles

• dx: low <10% radioactive iodine intake

• management: symptomatic with NSAIDS, beta blocker

  • monitor hypothyroid after initial period
