Manual physiotherapy

A variety of chest physiotherapy is available without evidence that one is superior.

Autogenic drainage technique involves breathing techniques that help bring mucous up from the lungs. It can be used by anyone and without extra tools or help, but can be difficult to learn.1

Manual percussion can be used when another caregiver is available. It can be done with or without extra pneumatic percussors.2

Mechanical devices

The use of PEP devices may be beneficial. Data is limited.

Examples of oral devices include Acapella, Aerobika, Flutter valves. Patient takes breath in with larger than tidal volume breaths and exhales with resistance. The PEEP keeps airway open that may be blocked by mucous. Then, it switches between low and high resistance to cause vibrations that move the mucous up.

External percussion vests are also used inpatient. The can be helpful if patient have trouble with making big tidal volumes. Examples include Metaneb3 and Volara4. Metaneb:
