Virus Sturcture

Structures

  • icosahedral very stable

  • enveloped not very stable in environment
  • naked: durable protein coat, survive in enviroment

RNA

  • host cell synthesize protein for +RNA immediately

  • top: positive sense
  • middle: negative sense. Nucleic acid not translatable. Must be translated by RNA polymerase, flip 3' and 5' and flip base, strand now looks like +RNA

Replication

  • -RNA used to make +RNA genome

  • +RNA used to make -RNA genome

DNA

Infectivity

  • infectivity: whether or not genetic material can be infectious by itself

Segmented

Overview

  • papilloma, polyoma, hepadena: circular DNA
  • parvo: smallest, single DNA
  • pox: largest, only one replicate in cytoplasm

  • corona: helical
