excessive dynamic airway collapse and tracheomalacia
Overview

- tracheomalacia and EDAC are both part of excessive central airway collapse
- tracheomalacia is widening of coronal dimension and narrowing of sagittal dimension from weakening of the cartilages
- EDAC is anterior bowing of posterior membrane from weakening of longitudinal elastic fibers, cartilage is ok
- severity:
- mild: 70%
- moderate 80-90%
- severe: over 90%
Diagnosis
- you can see it on CT scan
- PFT can often show variable expiratory obstruction

Treatment
- tracheobronchomalacia are often symptomatic and need treatment: e.g. tracheobronchoplasty (TBP)
- EDAC may or may not be symptomatic. 1
