nocturnal oxygen does not treat root cause of OSA
- nocturnal oxygen is often prescribed for nocturnal hypoxemia
- oxygen does not improve obstructive events
- patients can still have downstream effects of OSA: sympathetic activation (am HTN), microarousals, sleep fragmentation, large changes in intrathoracic pressure
- recent data have shown 5L O2 compared to 2-3L may have improvement in am BP elevation
- nocturnal oxygen can be used as an adjunct after fixing underlying obstruction with CPAP1
