The most feared complication of prolonged cerebrospinal fluid drainage via an EVD is infection. Infection is seen in 3% to 70% of cases, depending on the criteria used to determine infection. Unfortunately, early removal of the EVD is not commonly an option due to the subsequent development of hydrocephalus, which can be life-threatening.1
