Factor 8 is elevated in liver disease and decreased in DIC

Patients with liver disease can have similar coagulopathy labs compared to patients with DIC. In this case, one could check factor 8 level to distinguish between the two. Factor 8 is produced by endothelial cells and is released as liver cells are destroyed (elevated in liver disease). In DIC, activated protein C breaks down factor 8 (lower in DIC).1
