infiltrative cardiomyopathy ultrasound findings

"Starry night" appearance of the myocardium

Infiltrative cardiomyopathy results from infiltration of the myocardium by things such as amyloid protein, iron, or tumor. Such infiltration of the myocardium results in restrictive physiology, and patients typically present with the subacute onset of symptoms of heart failure. Echocardiographic appearances can vary depending on the specific cause but often show thickening of the left ventricle and preservation of apical function (choice A is incorrect). The classic "starry night" appearance of the myocardium is sometimes seen in patients with amyloidosis (Videos 2 and 3).1
