Major types of shock are as follows: cardiogenic, distributive, obstructive, hypovolemic

  • RV failure more common in ICU

However, it may be easier to remember from head to toe:

  • neurogenic
    • trauma
    • spinal anesthesia
  • cardiac
    • LV or RV failure
    • MI
    • tamponade
    • LVOT obstruction
    • PE
    • tachycardia or bradycardia
    • Post arrest or MI SIRS
    • anaphylaxis
    • hypovolemia
  • pulmonary
    • pneumothorax, high autoPEEP, decompensated pulmonary HTN
  • hematologic
    • bleeding
  • endocrine
    • adrenal crisis
    • thyroid storm
  • GI
  • infectious
    • septic shock
