propofol infusion syndrome is associated with high dose continuous infusion
- related: ICU sedation
- tags: #literature #icu
- PRIS is propofol related infusion syndrome
- Associated with continuous infusion > 48 hours at high doses (> 70 mcg/kg/min)
- symptoms include bradycardia, metabolic acidosis with lactic acidosis (propofol infusion syndrome can lead to elevated lactic acidosis), rhabdo, AKI, cardiogenic shock
- checking triglyceride levels can help avoid infusion syndrome (stop propofol when triglycerides are over 500?)
- treatment includes stopping propofol 1

propofol infusion syndrome can lead to elevated lactic acidosis
- Propofol infusion syndrome (propofol infusion syndrome is associated with high dose continuous infusion) can also produce lactic acidosis, often accompanied by refractory bradycardia, ventricular dysrhythmias, rhabdomyolysis, hyperlipidemia, acute kidney injury, and cardiovascular collapse. Although this syndrome has been seen with short-term infusion of propofol, it is quite rare and more often seen with prolonged infusions. Moreover, it would be expected to elevate the lactate-pyruvate ratio.[^1]

use propofol and precedex combination to minimize agitation and delirium
- propofol alone can cause propofol infusion syndrome, metabolic acidosis. propofol infusion syndrome is associated with high dose continuous infusion
